Shipbuilding industry is the most challenging workplace for welding. There are several adverse factors for welding which can cause severe welding issues.

- Hostile welding environment : Outdoors, narrow spacing, wind, cold temperature, and humidity, can all cause welding defects
- Frequent movement of welders : High turnover rates of trained welders
Proper control of welding environment and welding parameters are very important for shipbuilding or offshore structures to prevent welding defects, excessive distortion, or other issues. Proper WPS and periodical training of welders are also essential factors.
